WHY TRAVELING TO ROME: THE REASONS WHY PEOPLE COME TO ROME |
Generally we can say that traveling for pleasure, whether for curiosity, nostalgia, religious conviction, or simply to satisfy an inherent need to learn the history of Rome, is still today an essential part of the human condition for centuries.
In the medieval period people visited Rome to obtain the indulgences when the pope Boniface VII proclaimed the Holy Jubilee in 1300; later, as the Gran Tour took a hold in the eighteenth century, piety was replaced by the need felt by the elite to educate its young and to compensate for the disgraceful training offered in that time by the schools.
The levelling effect of the napoleonic wars changed all that and in the age of the steamship the railway mass was born when Mr Thomas Cook offered a " Great Circular Tour of the Continent".
There hev been guidebooks as long as there have been travellers. Even if not intended as such, the Histories of Herodotus would have been an indispensable companion to a wandering Greek. Centuries later Pausania's guided to the monuments of Greece was widely used by traveling Romans, intent on discovering the roots of their civilization.
So, why Travel to Rome?

Because the Eternal city is of one of the world's greatest ancient civilizations, rampant with artistic and architectural treasures, piazzas and the Pope, Rome - at 3,000 years old today - is a must-see city
The needs and the expectations of the enquiring traveller changed rapidly during the last years thanks to more informations rescued on the internet and the tour guides of Rome are constantly improving their educations attending more classes of archaeology and art history at the Universities of Rome.
