THE METRO SUBWAY SYSTEM IN ROME

Rome has an excellent system of city buses and a subway, called " Metro Roma ". One of the best travel buys in the city is Roma Metro Bus map. You can buy this modestly priced guide to public transportation at bookstores, newstands, Tabacchi shops or Atac Offices, like the one located in front of Termini railway station in Via Volturno 65.

As bus routes have recently changed, it is especially important to get the latest edition of this map. It tells you about fares, route of city buses, how to get to public offices and monuments; shows you main city streets and gives you bus tram and subway schedules for night bus service and trains for the airport. There is information about Rome sightseeing tours, schedule changes, useful telephone numbers and lists of shops where tickets can be purchased.
The recent reconfiguration of bus routes in Rome has produced valuable changes for the tourist and since buses and cars are not permitted in large squares such as St. Peter's square it is possible to truly appreciate the beauty of the open space and the buildings surrounding it.

Rome now has a group of small electric city buses, each with a sitting and standing capacity of about 20 riders. These make circular tours around the old city, stopping at important squares and famous locations.

The roman subway is called " Metropolitana " or " Metro " It consists of only two lines:

- B line: built in 1931 ( B stands for Blue ) crosses the city from East to West and can take you also to the Colosseum and to the basilica of saint Paul outside the walls;

- A line: newer line built in 1985 crosses the city from North to South and can take you to the Vatican if you get off at" Ottaviano" metro stop.

The metro B line is opened every day holidays included from 5.30 am until 11.30 pm but the metro A is undergoing a restoration until 2007 included and closes earlier, at 9.00 pm.

At the moment there is only one station where the two Rome subway lines cross and this is in Termini railway station where you can switch from a line into the other.

The train frequency for both Rome metro lines is scheduled in around 4 minutes.

WHAT KIND OF METRO AND BUS TICKETS ROME SUBWAY AND BUS SYSTEM HAVE:

- BIT: valid for one ride in the metro and in the bus for 75 Minutes and costs 1 euro;
- BIT :( Biglietto turistico integrato ): this is a good public service that customers can have in Rome and it's a ticket valid for 3 days in the metro and in the bus ( unlimited rides) and costs 11 euro
- CIS : ( carta integrata settimanale ). It's a weekly unlimited rides pass that costs 16 euro with 7 days validity.

You can buy the metro and bus tickets in the newspaper kiosks in the metro stations and in the tobacco stores.

Why all the tickets look like the same ?

Because the difference is perceived after that you have validated your tickets: on the back side of them it's marked when they will expire and the period of validity ( minutes or days).
The tickets must be validated just once, at the moment of entering in the stations or in the buses and must be kept for eventual controls until the end of their validity.
