The Colosseum one hour guided tour is made to measure for you.

Vespasian, emperor from 69 to 79 AD commissioned the Colosseum. The year before he became emperor, four consecutive emperors had been murdered for being cruel and selfish rulers. But Vespasian was a survivor, because he was a leader of action and strong conscience. He knew that he would have to work hard to win the favor of the roman people, who where exhausted from the anger, poverty and violence caused by his precedessor Nero.
One way to gain favor was to provide the people with entertainment. Gladiator games were wildly popular among Romans, even though the city of Rome had no suitable place for holding them. The city needed and amphiteater, or arena. Vespasian decided that he would provide on as a gift to the people. He started the construction in the year 70 AD on the enormous complex of the Golden House of Nero, ( Domus Aurea ) drying the lake of this emperor sentenced to the oblivion by the Roman senators. When the Colosseum was completed after ten years, the name that the Roman gave to this construction was " Colosseum ", to point its vicinity to the giant bronzed portrait statue of the emperor Nero located outside of the lake of the Golden House.
Vespasian did not live enough to see his amphiteater completed; after he died in 79 AD, his oldest son, Titus, continued the construction of the amphiteater and inhaugurated the Colosseum in the year 80 AD after the victory of Jerusalem.
The roman colosseum convey both the majesty and might of the roman empire. It dominates the space it occupies, towering above the surrounding streets and buildings. It is at once both a symbol and a metaphor for the imperial might of the roman empire that dominated the ancient mediterranean world.
This building was the showpiece of the new Flavian dynasty of emperors ( Vespasian, Titus and Domitian ), who reigned from 69 to 89 AD. It was the largest stone amphiteatre in the world and was designed to impress onlookers with the power, worth and beneficence of the Flavian dynasty.
it's not hard to understand why this association between Rome and its most famous ancient monument should be so intense. In the fifth century AD Rome fell before the barbarian onslaught. The towering mass of the Flavian Amphiteatre ( this is the real name of the Colosseum ), had impressed itself upon the minds of visitors as a distant, yet powerful, echo of the former greatness of Rome. Throughout the dangerous years of the early Middle ages, this mighty monument served as a fortress to some of the most powerful rival families and their factions and it stood as a crumbling, yet proud reminder of the former glory of Rome.
