ANCIENT ROME WALKING TOUR ORGANIZED BY ROME TOUR GUIDE

Welcome to Rome, the greatest city in the world. It is the heart of the largest empire ever seen, ruling over milions of people in places as far apart as England and Egypt.
Around 3.000 years ago a tribe of people called the Latins settled on the seven hills where Rome, Italy, stands today. They had chosen a good place to live. From the top of the hills they could easily see any enemies approaching.

The Tiber river below supplied fresh water and they could reach the sea by boat. Soon more villages developed nearby, and eventually they all joined together to form the city of Rome. Filled with spacious palaces and public buildings, ancient Rome was also the most crowded place on earth. Over one milion people lived in Ancient Rome during the II century AD and although the empire'riches pour into Rome, almost 200,000 people were unemployed and rely on the emperor fo free grain.

Rome's spiritual heart was the ancient Forum. Centuries ago, when Rome was a village, its people met in this open space to trade and discuss politics. At the end of the Roman empire ( v century AD ), due to the economical crisis, the old square was built up with giant temples and political memorials, and the markets had moved elsewhere.

The old ruling Senate house is still by the Forum, but Rome's real center of power was the emperor palace located in the Palatine hill.
For 250 years after beating Carthage and its ruler Hannibal, Rome's efficient armies conquered all the lands around the mediterranena sea.

A great general, Julius Caesar took over the Senate's power and ruled Rome alone, but he was murdered by the senators, led by Brutus and Cassius during the Ides of March 44 BC.

After Caesar's death, his adopted son Augustus took control and he became the first in a long line of emperors.
Rome legacy was also based on the roads system: there are over 30.000 miles odf superb highway covering the empire, all built by the Roman army. Communications were easier 2.000 years ago and you could cross the empire on horseback in just 100 days.
